South Dakota

In 2001, I came to the USA as a graduate student majoring in biochemistry and became a naturalized citizen in 2010. Since it has been ten years after I became a citizen, we went to Mount Rushmore to show our respect to this great nation and beautiful land of freedom.

In the Avenue of Flags, Mount Rushmore in the background, the 56 flags represent the 50 states, one district, three territories, and two commonwealths of the United States of America.

The night view of Mount Rushmore is spectacular too.

In 2013 we visited Crazy Horse Memorial in SD. The famous statue depicts the Lakota leader, Crazy Horse, riding a horse and pointing to his tribal land. Sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski began this work in 1948. His family members and their supporters are continuing to create the world’s largest sculptural. The Indian Museum of North America and the Native American Educational & Cultural Center also provide educational and cultural programming.

On our way to Mount Rushmore, we stopped at another attraction, Wall Drug Store. Beginning in 1931, located at the small town of Wall in South Dakota, Wall Drug now attracts more than 2 millions visitors a years. It offers a dining, gifts and souvenirs with the largest privately owned Western art and illustrations in the country. Wall Drug is an interesting stop for travelers visiting South Dakota attractions.

  1. Mount Rushmore was the first major attraction we ever saw in the US, and it’s spectacular. But just as spectacular, if you haven’t seen it, is the Crazy Horse Memorial, also in South Dakota. It was then (mid-1990s) and still is now a “work in progress” but is definitely worth a visit. Truly monumental, the world’s largest mountain carving.

    1. Thank you for your comment! We went to the crazy horse memorial 7 years ago. It is very spectacular. Yes, it was still in process in 2013, because they didn’t want to take the federal money. I was also very interested in the culture of American Indian.
